Don’t have the time to go through all the football headlines? Here some top stories:
The Dallas Morning News reports Cowboys starting RB Julius Jones doesn’t get much time inside the 20, but in training camp practices he’s getting some repetitions. Last season, the Cowboys took Jones out on third downs and inside the 20 for RB Marion Barber. On Saturday, Jones was on the field inside the 20 and scored from the 4 to give Dallas a 14-0 lead. “It’s kind of a reward,” Jones said. “When you get the ball down the field and you can punch it in, it is good.” Dallas rushed for 190 yards led by RB Tyson Thompson’s 75 yards on 16 carries. Barber rushed 11 times for 57 yards and Jones finished with nine carries for 31 yards.
The Press Gazette reports Packers second-round draft pick RB Brandon Jackson got off to a much faster start in his second NFL preseason game. A week after his first 12 carries went for only 21 yards at Pittsburgh, Jackson had 38 yards rushing on nine carries — including a 1-yard touchdown plunge — after one quarter and had 13 carries for 54 yards at halftime. The only obvious negative in his performance was a dropped screen pass that probably wouldn’t gone for much yardage in the second quarter.
The Seattle Times reports Seahawks WR Nate Burleson started in place of WR D.J. Hackett last night……
against the Packers. Hackett is No. 1 on the depth chart along with WR Deion Branch. Burleson got significant snaps with the starters last week in training camp. Hackett still played Saturday.
The Contra Costa Times reports Oakland Raiders QB Daunte Culpepper fumbled the snap on his first play for the second straight game. This time, however, he recovered the loose ball. Against the Arizona Cardinals, the Raiders lost possession and allowed a touchdown on the ensuing drive. Culpepper atoned for the miscue by guiding the Raiders on a nine-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a Culpepper pass to FB Zack Crockett for a 12-yard touchdown. He completed all three of his passes for 22 yards on the drive. He also led another drive that resulted in a touchdown.
The Contra Costa Times reports Oakland Raiders RB LaMont Jordan upstaged fellow RB Dominic Rhodes, who started, last night against the 49ers. Rhodes carried the load in the Raiders’ first three possessions. He totaled only 5 yards on five rushes and added one reception for 8 yards. Then the Raiders turned to Jordan for his first action this preseason. Jordan’s first hand-off resulted in a fumble — it was charged to QB Andrew Walter — and a 3-yard loss. It was nothing but positives for Jordan the rest of a 17-play, 77-yard drive that consumed almost nine minutes and culminated with a 3-yard touchdown run by Jordan. Raiders HC Lane Kiffin called Jordan’s number nine of the 17 plays. Jordan notched first downs on three of those plays and scored a touchdown on another. Jordan wasn’t through yet. On the Raiders’ next series, Jordan ripped off a 32-yard run around right end for a first down in 49ers territory. It was good news since Kiffin is counting upon Jordan to be the primary ballcarrier until Rhodes returns from his four-game regular season suspension. At that time, Kiffin intends to use a two-headed attack, with the player that has hot hand getting the bulk of the carries.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Washington Redskins WR Antwaan Randle El, listed as the team’s No. 2 wideout, is expected to assume a bigger role in the passing game this season. Saturday night against his former team [the Steelers], he had two catches for 19 yards. He caught a 12-yarder over the middle on third-and-10 in the first quarter, and he had a 7-yard reception on a sideline pattern in the second quarter.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also reports Steelers WR Santonio Holmes caught two passes for 51 yards on the Steelers’ lone scoring drive in the first half of last night’s preseason game against the Steelers. Holmes continued to display signs that he is a star in the making.
