2007 Fantasy Football - Week 5 Player Updates (Saturday Edition)
by Chris Mooney
Here’s some updates for you:
Colt RB Joseph Addai (shoulder) did not practice again Friday and is officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay. The Indianapolis Star reported that he is not expected to play. RB Kenton Keith will be the starter if Addai can’t play. Keep in mind the Colts play a late game, so I won’t have any indication on whether or not he will play by 1pm Sunday. The Colts could, however, downgrade him on the injury later today, which would be good sign that he will, in fact, miss the game.
Patriot RB Laurence Maroney (groin) was limited in practice again Friday and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against Cleveland. We’re just going to have to see if he’s active on game day. If he is active, he’ll likely be able to handle his usual role. Luckily, they play a 1pm game, so I should know around 12pm ET tomorrow.
Colt WR Marvin Harrison (knee) did not practice again Friday because of a bruised knee and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay. The Indianapolis Star reported that he is not expected to play. Backup Aaron Moorehead replaced him in last week’s game and was expected to start for him this week. But Moorehead (back) is now questionable for the game. Rookie WR Anthony Gonzalez is the next player who would be in line to start if Harrison and Moorehead are out.
Bronco RB Travis Henry (knee/ankle) practiced Friday, and head coach Mike Shanahan said he will play Sunday if there are no setbacks. Henry claimed that he saw all his usual reps (practice is closed to the media). He’s listed as questionable. His future beyond this week is in limbo because of a reported failed drug test and a legal battle with the NFL. If Henry can’t play Sunday against San Diego, backup Selvin Young would get the start (he also took some reps with the first-team Friday, according to some insiders).
Texan RB Ahman Green (knee) practiced some on Friday, according to the team’s official site, but he will be a game-time decision, according to head coach Gary Kubiak. If he plays, his carries still could be somewhat limited because he’s clearly not 100% yet, but Kubiak seems optimistic about his recovery. RB Ron Dayne (ribs) practiced fully all week and will start again Sunday if Green is out.
Raven TE Todd Heap (hamstring) missed practice again Friday and will be a game-time decision for Sunday’s game against the 49ers, coach Brian Billick said. Heap is listed as questionable. But since Heap did not practice on Friday, it’s not looking good for him to play. TE Daniel Wilcox (foot) also did not practice and could also miss the game. If both are out, Quinn Sypniewski would have to start.
Lions WR Calvin Johnson (back) ran through some drills on Thursday and Friday and is still questionable for Sunday’s game. His situation doesn’t appear to be very promising, but the Detroit Free Press reports today that he’s likely to play. We’d make sure he was active tomorrow before starting him. WR Mike Furrey would likely start for him again if he can’t play.
Bronco WR Javon Walker (knee) missed practice again Friday and seemed resigned that he will miss at least one more game because of his right knee inflammation, the Denver Post reported. He said he didn’t feel positive or negative about his chances to play on Sunday against San Diego, but added, “We’ll just wait and see after the bye week,” which indicates he hopes to return Oct. 21 against the Steelers. Look for WR Brandon Stokley (calf) to start for him. Stokley is listed as probable.
Redskin WR Santana Moss (groin) didn’t practice Friday and is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against Detroit, the Washington Post reported. WR Brandon Lloyd also missed some practice time this week with a bruised shin, but he has been a non-factor in the offense. The coaching staff told WR James Thrash to prepare to start in Moss’s place, and recently signed WRs Keenan McCardell and Reche Caldwell are ready for their first action with the Redskins. As for Moss, he did seem optimistic after testing the groin on Friday, but the best case scenario is he test it again pre-game and they decide to give it a shot with him playing on Sunday.
Cardinal WR Anquan Boldin (hip) missed practice again Friday and is officially doubtful and not expected to play against St. Louis, according to the Arizona Republic. Boldin is still experiencing pain from what has been called a muscle strain or tear near the hip. WR Bryant Johnson would start for him again.
Quarterbacks
Panther QB Jake Delhomme (elbow) missed practice again Friday and is doubtful for Sunday against New Orleans, the Charlotte Observer reported, so backup QB David Carr will get another start.
Raven QB Steve McNair (groin) practiced Friday and will start against the 49ers on Sunday.
Jet QB Chad Pennington (ankle) is listed as questionable but practiced all wee, so he should play on Sunday against the Giants.
Steeler QB Ben Roethlisberger (foot) is probable for Sunday’s game against the Seahawks.
Dolphin QB Trent Green (right elbow) is probable for Sunday’s game against the Texans.
Running Backs
Redskin RB Clinton Portis (knee) practiced again Friday and is expected to play Sunday against the Lions after he took a full workload in practice both Thursday and Friday.
Giant RB Brandon Jacobs (knee) practiced fully this week and is expected to reclaim his starting job for Sunday’s game against the Jets, the New York Daily News reported. He is listed as probable. RB Derrick Ward (ankle) has been limited in practice but is also expected to play, although he’s listed as questionable.
Packer RB Vernand Morency (knee) practiced again on Friday and is expected to play Sunday against Chicago. RB Brandon Jackson (shin) did not practice again on Friday and is questionable for the game.
Bear RB Adrian Peterson (calf) missed some practice time this week and is questionable for Sunday’s game.
Receivers
Panther WR Steve Smith injured his leg at the end of Friday’s practice and was “limited” by it, coach John Fox said, according to an Associated Press report, but he expects Smith to be fine and to play on Sunday against New Orleans. The report noted that Smith walked back to the locker room without limping. Smith wasn’t on their injury report on Friday, which is a sign that he’ll play.
Giant WR Plaxico Burress (ankle) missed practice again Friday but is expected to play Sunday against the Jets, the New York Daily News reported. Burress will continue to have limited practice time each week because of his severely sprained ankle but he should be able to play through it.
Raven WR Derrick Mason (knee) did not practice Friday and questionable for Sunday’s game, but he said he didn’t practice as a precaution, so it sounds like he will be able to play.
Buccaneer WR Ike Hilliard (ankle) practiced Friday and is expected to play.
Steeler WR Hines Ward (knee) is out for Sunday’s game against Seattle. WR Nate Washington will start at flanker for the second straight week.
Texan WR Andre Johnson (knee) had fluid drained from his knee Saturday and said the injury has healed and he is just trying to rebuild the strength and flexibility in his knee, the Houston Chronicle reported. His return date remains uncertain, but he won’t play in Week Five. WR Andre Davis will start in his place again Sunday.
Ram WR Isaac Bruce (hamstring) is out for Sunday’s game. WR Drew Bennett (thigh) was able to participate fully and will start opposite Torry Holt.
Packer WR Greg Jennings (hamstring) practiced Friday and is expected to play.
Patriot WR Donte Stallworth (knee) was limited all this week in practice and is questionable for Sunday’s game.
Chief WR Eddie Kennison (hamstring) is practicing fully this week and is not on the official injury report. He is expected to return to the starting lineup Sunday against Jacksonville.
Seahawk WR D.J. Hackett (ankle) is out for Week Five as Nate Burleson continues to start for him.
Charger WR Craig Davis (ankle) was able to practice Friday but is questionable for Sunday’s game.
WR Jacoby Jones (shoulder) was limited in practice again Friday and is doubtful for Sunday’s game. WR Jerome Mathis (leg) was hospitalized on Thursday as doctors try to treat his leg injury and is out.
Charger TE Antonio Gates (illness) missed Thursday’s practice and was added to the injury report, but he is expected to be able to play on Sunday. He practiced Friday.
Brown TE Kellen Winslow (shoulder) was limited in practice Thursday because of his mild shoulder separation but is expected to play on Sunday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He was able to practice Friday. He participated in only one practice last week due to the injury but played in the game and caught four passes for 96 yards. “That’s something he’s going to have to deal with all year,” coach Romeo Crennel said of the injury, according to the team’s web site.
Steeler TE Matt Spaeth (quad) is not on the injury report this week and is expected to play against the Seahawks.
