by Chris Mooney
Here some injury news of late:
Quarterbacks
Cardinal QB Kurt Warner (elbow) was limited in practice Wednesday as he experimented with braces and wraps on his injured left (non-throwing) elbow. He will continue to practice this week as if he is going to play on Sunday, the Arizona Republic reported, and the team is not ruling him out. He said the elbow, which has a torn ligament, hurts more on handoffs than on passes. If he can’t play, he will be replaced as the starter by QB Tim Rattay, and backed up by recently signed Tim Hasselbeck.
Titan QB Vince Young (quad) missed practice Wednesday and is day-to-day with a strained right quadriceps. The team is still hopeful that he will be able to play on Sunday against Houston, but there is a good chance that he won’t play, the Tennessean reported. Coach Jeff Fisher said during an interview Thursday on Sirius NFL Radio that Young might not practice at all this week. If he can’t play, backup QB Kerry Collins will get the start against the Texans.
Ram QB Marc Bulger (ribs) is practicing fully and will start Sunday at Seattle after missing two games because of broken ribs. Bulger said he is feeling much better this week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and much of the soreness is gone, though the ribs aren’t completely healed. Backup QB Gus Frerotte started for him the last two weeks.
Raven QB Steve McNair (groin/back) did not practice Wednesday and will not start Sunday against Buffalo. Kyle Boller will start again as the Ravens hope to get McNair healthy coming off their Week Eight bye, coach Brian Billick said.
Bill QB J.P. Losman (knee) is practicing fully but rookie Trent Edwards has been named the starter for Sunday’s game against the Ravens.
QB Alex Smith(shoulder) was limited in practice Wednesday and still has a chance to play Sunday but might be given another week off to give his separated throwing shoulder more time to heal, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Backup Trent Dilfer took all of the first-team reps on Wednesday and would start for Smith again if he can’t play.
Cowboy QB Tony Romo (shoulder) has a sprained left (non-throwing) shoulder but said he’s having no problems with it, according to the Forth Worth Star-Telegram.
Raider QB Josh McCown (toe) had limited participation in practice Wednesday and QB Daunte Culpepper will remain the starter on Sunday against Kansas City.
Panther QB David Carr (back) was active for last week’s game but relegated to backup duty behind 43-year-old QB Vinny Testaverde, who led the Panthers to a victory despite having only three full practices with the team. Coach John Fox said no decision has been made about whether Carr or Testaverde will start in Week Eight after the team’s bye.
Packer QB Brett Favre (ankle) said someone rolled up on his surgically repaired ankle early in Sunday’s game. He said it was sore after the game but he hopes it will feel better after the team’s Week Seven bye.
Running Backs
Patriot RB Sammy Morris (chest) is likely out for Week Seven and could be out for up to a month with a broken bone in his chest, the Boston Herald reported, citing a league source. Morris missed practice Wednesday, and the team has not updated his status for Sunday’s game against Miami. He left last week’s game in the third quarter and was replaced by Kevin Faulk.
Morris has been starting for RB Laurence Maroney (groin), who missed his third straight game last week. Maroney was limited in practice on Wednesday, and the Associated Press reported that he is out for Sunday’s game, but that has not been confirmed by any other media outlet.
Colt RB Joseph Addai (bruised chest) is expected to return to practice Thursday and should be ready to go for Monday’s game against Jacksonville, the Indianapolis Star reported. Addai missed the Week Five game, as backup RB Kenton Keith started for him.
Ram RB Steven Jackson (groin) was limited in practice Wednesday, and it remains unlikely that Jackson will play Sunday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, though coach Scott Linehan would not rule out the possibility. Linehan called it a “real outside chance” that Jackson will play. RB Brian Leonard is likely to get another start against Seattle.
Bengal RB Rudi Johnson (hamstring) did not practice on Wednesday but is expected to play on Sunday against the Jets and could have a bigger role than last week, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Johnson backed up RB Kenny Watson last week and carried the ball only four times.
Eagle RB Brian Westbrook (abdominal strain) is practicing fully and is not on the injury report this week.
Texan RB Ahman Green (knee) sat out practice Wednesday to rest his sore knee but is expected to start on Sunday against Tennessee, the Houston Chronicle reported. RB Ron Dayne was a healthy scratch last week as Sam Gado served as Green’s backup, but it’s unclear which back will play behind Green on Sunday.

RB Dominic Rhodes was activated last week but did not have a carry as RB Justin Fargas served as Jordan’s backup.

Jaguar RB Fred Taylor (groin) is expected to return to practice Thursday as the team prepares for Monday’s game against the Colts. Taylor was rested for most of the second half last week after his legs “locked up” in the groin area.
Bronco RB Travis Henry (knee/ankle) is practicing fully and is not on the injury report, so he is ready to play this week, but his long-term future his clouded by a failed drug test that could result in a suspension.
Lion RB Kevin Jones (foot) is expected to start against the Bucs, coach Rod Marinelli said after Wednesday’s practice. Marinelli said the team will continue to monitor his recovery from Lisfranc surgery, but that Jones is expected to get the bulk of the carries, the Detroit News reported. RB Tatum Bell will be the backup and will spell Jones, and RB T.J. Duckett is expected to be active for the game.
Giant RB Derrick Ward (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, as he is still hampered by a sprained ankle, the New York Daily News reported. He is expected to be able to play on Sunday as the backup to Brandon Jacobs.
Chief RB Priest Holmes (neck) returned to practice Wednesday, the first day he was eligible to come off the PUP list, but coach Herman Edwards did not say if he will be activated for Sunday’s game against Oakland. Backup RB Michael Bennett was traded to Tampa Bay on Monday.
Buc RB Michael Pittman (ankle) is out 6-8 weeks with an injured right ankle. so RB Earnest Graham is now the starter. The team signed RB/FB Zack Crockett for depth and traded for RB Michael Bennett. RB Carnell Williams (knee) is out for the season.
Brown RB Jamal Lewis (foot) was inactive on Sunday and RB Jason Wright got the start. The Browns are on a bye in Week Seven.
Receivers
WR Andre Johnson (knee) on Wednesday: “He ran again today. He did more cutting and those type of things. He still did not work with the football team, so we’ll see. I think he’s day-to-day and he’s just waiting any day for us to turn him loose with the guys as far as getting involved in the football part of it, but he’s running at full speed and cutting at full speed. We’ll just have to make the best decision for him, but he’ll be day-to-day.” (On the chances that Johnson will play Sunday) “I have a hard time telling you that today. Everything is so good; the rehab process and everything he’s doing is so positive, but ya’ll know as well as I do until you step out here on the field and do it, it’s hard to make that call. I would say, let’s wait and see tomorrow, let’s see if he does get some plays in with the team. You know, he looked pretty close to full speed, so we’ll see.” Be aware that the Houston Chronicle is reporting Johnson definitely won’t play this week.
Bronco WR Javon Walker (knee) to have knee surgury and will be out approx. 3 weeks.

Asked if he was 100 percent, Boldin said, “I’m good enough to play; that’s all that matters.” WR Bryant Johnson will return to a backup role
Seahawk WR Deion Branch (foot) will miss at least one more week. WR D.J. Hackett (ankle) returned to practice Wednesday and is expected to be able to play this week, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. WR Isaac Bruce (hamstring) was limited in practice but coach Scott Linehan said he should be able to play. WR Drew Bennett (hamstring) did not practice and is likely questionable, while KR/WR Dante Hall (ankle) is out, so Marques Hagans will again handle the return duties and the #3 WR role.
