Week 1 Damage Report
by Chris Mooney
OK…Here’s the injuries related to the Sunday games:
The New York Daily News is reporting that Giant QB Eli Manning (shoulder) suffered only a sprained right shoulder and no structural damage, according to the results of an MRI taken Monday, and could miss the Week Two game against Green Bay. Citing a league source, Daily News reporter Ralph Vacchiano writes: “The hope is that if he does miss any time it will only be a week or two at most. The length of his absence may all depend on Manning’s tolerance for pain and how he progresses as the week goes along. He will likely be very limited in practice this week, and his status for the Packers game is not likely to be known until right before kickoff.” ESPNews reports the New York Giants have denied the ESPN report that states New York Giants QB Eli Manning (shoulder) has a separated shoulder and will be out for about a month.
Jet QB Chad Pennington (ankle) left Sunday’s game in the third quarter with a sprained right ankle, hopping off the field under his own power, but came back to lead a TD drive (with the ankle heavily wrapped) before pulling himself out for good in the fourth quarter. He will likely be at least questionable for Week Two against Baltimore, so Kellen Clemens might get the start.
The NFL Network is reporting that Giant RB Brandon Jacobs (knee) will miss 3-5 weeks with a sprained MCL in his right knee. He is scheduled to have an MRI today, and preliminary indications are that the injury is not season-ending. Derrick Ward replaced him on Sunday and rushed for 89 yards on 13 carries and caught four passes for 27 yards, including a 9-yard TD.
Viking RB Chester Taylor (oblique) had an MRI on Monday morning and it revealed a contusion of his oblique. Head coach Brad Childress said there is no structural damage and Taylor’s status will be re-evaluated later in the week, depending in part on whether he can return to practice on Wednesday. His injury early in Sunday’s game allowed rookie Adrian Peterson to take over as the workhorse back, and he looked very impressive in his NFL debut, with 103 yards on 19 carries and an electric 60-yard TD reception.
Buccaneer RB Carnell Williams (ribs) suffered bruised ribs on a hit by Seattle LB Lofa Tatupa in Sunday’s game and his status for Week Two against New Orleans is uncertain. Williams rushed for 60 yards on 12 carries in Week One.
Packer RB Vernand Morency (knee) was held out of Sunday’s game because of lingering soreness from the strained patellar tendon in his right knee sustained on the first day of training camp July 28. His status for Week Two is uncertain.
Seahawk WR D.J. Hackett (ankle) suffered an ankle injury in the first half against Tampa, preventing the Seahawks from using their four-wideout sets the rest of the game, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Coach Mike Holmgren, speaking on his radio show Monday, said Hackett’s injury is not season-ending, but he doesn’t know how long he’ll be out. ESPNews reports Seattle Seahawks WR D.J. Hackett (ankle) is out indefinitely with an ankle injury.
Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs WR Eddie Kennison (hamstring) will not play Week 2. WR Dwayne Bowe will likely take Kennison’s spot.
Jaguar PK Josh Scobee (quad) hurt his quad during pre-game warm-ups Sunday and could not handle field goals or kickoffs against the Titans, which might have been a factor in the Jags’ loss. The injury is not considered serious, and Scobee could return for Week Two.
