Week 3 Damage Report
by Chris Mooney
Here some injury news of late:
Quarterbacks
Panther QB Jake Delhomme (elbow) has an elbow strain that will not require surgery, head coach John Fox announced Monday, and he has not been ruled out for the Week Four game against Tampa Bay. Backup QB David Carr replaced him on Sunday and would start in Week Four if Delhomme can’t play.
Bill QB J.P. Losman (knee) suffered an MCL sprain during Sunday’s loss at the Patriots and he is likely to miss at least two weeks, according to a report in the Buffalo News. Rookie Trent Edwards replaced him Sunday and will likely start in Week Four.
Raven QB Steve McNair (groin) was pulled from Sunday’s loss in the second half and replaced by Kyle Boller but head coach Brian Billick said it was for precautionary reasons. McNair is expected to be able to play next week.
Bronco QB Jay Cutler (ankle) suffered a mild ankle sprain during Sunday’s game but he is expected to be able to play in Week Four.
Viking QB Tarvaris Jackson (groin) was inactive for Sunday’s game. Kelly Holcomb got the start in the loss to the Chiefs. Head coach Brad Childress said Jackson’s status for Week Four is uncertain at this point.
Raider QB Josh McCown (foot) hurt his left foot late in the first half of Sunday’s win over the Browns (he was already playing with a sprained right foot) and was replaced at the start of the second half by backup QB Daunte Culpepper. McCown will be re-evaluated on Monday.
Running Backs
Ram RB Steven Jackson (groin) has a partial tear of his left groin, the team announced Monday, and will not play in the Week Four game against Dallas.
Eagle RB Brian Westbrook (abdominal/knee) suffered an abdominal strain during Sunday’s game and is day-to-day, coach Andy Reid said Monday. A CT scan taken Monday showed no broken bones or structural damage. Westbrook also missed two practices last week with a sprained knee.
Texan RB Ahman Green (knee) underwent an MRI on Monday for his sprained knee and said the results were positive – “Nothing bad,” he said, according to the Houston Chronicle, “just swelling.” He said he is taking it day-by-day and doesn’t know if he will be able to play in Week Four.
Bengal RB Rudi Johnson (hamstring) was injured during the second half of Sunday’s loss and did not finish the game. He was replaced by backup RB Kenny Watson. Johnson will be re-evaluated on Monday.
Texan RB Ron Dayne (ribs) was inactive for Sunday’s game.
Raider RB LaMont Jordan (back) was active and had another nice game Sunday (29 carries for 121 yards, 1 TD) despite being questionable going into the game with a back injury. RB Dominic Rhodes has one week left on his NFL suspension, so keep an eye on Jordan’s injury situation.
Lion RB Kevin Jones (foot) saw limited action in his season debut Sunday coming off Lisfranc foot surgery, scoring a short TD in the first quarter.
Packer RB Vernand Morency (knee) missed his third straight game Sunday after his knee swelled up after practice last week.
Viking RB Chester Taylor (hip) was inactive for the second straight week but coach Brad Childress said he has a good chance of returning in Week Four.
Buc RB Carnell Williams (ribs) was pulled from Sunday’s win over the Rams after fumbling the football. Coach Jon Gruden said he thought Williams re-injured his ribs and took him out as a precaution. Backup Ernest Graham came in and scored two TDs.
Jaguar RB Fred Taylor (leg) suffered a bruised leg during Sunday’s game but said afterward the leg was fine and he does not expect to miss any time, according to the Associated Press.
Packer RB DeShawn Wynn (ankle) left Sunday’s game with a sprained ankle and did not return.
Lion RB T.J. Duckett (ankle) was inactive Sunday.
Giant RB Brandon Jacobs (knee) missed his second straight game with a sprained knee, but coach Tom Coughlin said last week that Jacobs is getting closer to returning. RB Derrick Ward has played well as the starter.
Receivers
Lions WR Calvin Johnson (back) is day-to-day after suffering a bruised lower back when he fell hard on a great catch in the second quarter of Sunday’s loss. If he’s out, Mike Furrey would probably start for Johnson but Shaun McDonald, who has been very effective, should also see an increase in pass targets.
Steeler WR Hines Ward (leg) said he is fine and walked without a limp on Monday after suffering a bone bruise in his knee during Sunday’s game. An MRI showed no structural damage, but Ward’s status for the Week Four game is uncertain, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Redskin WR Santana Moss (groin) suffered a strained groin during Sunday’s game loss to the Giants – the same injury that slowed him in the preseason. He said Monday that he would probably not be able to play if the Redskins had a game in Week Four (they’re on a bye).
Texan WR Jacoby Jones (shoulder) suffered a separated AC joint in shoulder during Sunday’s game and will be re-evaluated, but coach Gary Kubiak said he is likely to miss some time, according to the Houston Chronicle.
49er TE Vernon Davis (knee) suffered a sprained knee during Sunday’s loss at the Steelers and is expected to have an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.
Brown TE Kellen Winslow (shoulder) came out of Sunday’s game with a bruised shoulder, according to coach Romeo Crennell. Winslow was seen wearing an ice pack on the shoulder Monday, according to a report on the team’s web site, but indicated that the injury is not serious.
Raven TE Todd Heap (concussion) sustained a mild concussion in Sunday’s game after making a nice catch in the fourth quarter. He is considered day-to-day and will be re-evaluated later in the week.
Texan WR Andre Johnson (knee) missed Sunday’s game with a sprained knee and will likely miss Week Four.
Giant WR Plaxico Burress (ankle) was active on Sunday and a had a nice game, scoring the go-ahead touchdown, despite a sprained ankle that kept him from practicing most of last week.
Eagle TE L.J. Smith (groin) was inactive in Week Three after undergoing a surgical procedure Friday to clear out scar tissue. He is week-to-week and his status for Week Four is uncertain.
Texan WR Andre’ Davis dislocated a finger in Sunday’s game.
Ram WR Isaac Bruce was dinged-up by a shot to the head in Sunday’s game, according to coach Scott Linehan, but was tested at halftime and cleared to play in the second half.
Packer WR Greg Jennings (hamstring) was active for Sunday’s game after not practicing much last week, and Jennings played well in his first start of the season.
